Powder Pigments

2006-3-15

Powder pigments are the purest form of pigment, indeed most other 'colour' materials such as paints and pastel chalks are basic pigments combined with bonding agents or a carrier medium.

Powder pigments produced for modellers are extremely finely ground and the quality of the base minerals ensures a consistency. They are commonly used for 'weathering' techniques, either as just a powder or combined with a carrier such as isopropyl alcohol or thinners. Powder pigments can also be mixed with plaster or resin to make realistic 'wet' mud for dioramas.

Examples of powder pigments specifically formulated for modellers can be found from MiG Pigments, Langley Models and Model Maker Productions amongst others. Artist pigments can also be of use, although those made for modellers tend to be specific colours that suit the application better.
