Polymer Clay
2006-2-7
Polymer clay is the generic name for a man-made modelling and sculpting material that combines plasticisers and polymer components to mimick natural clay. The advantage of polymer clays is that they remain consistent and pliable for long periods, then "bake" at relatively low temperatures ~130 degrees to cure them, not the several hundred required to kiln fire natural clays.
These are a few examples of polymer clays, the most common brands are the 'sculpey' family of products and 'Fimo!'
These small packets are available for under £2 each, and are ideal for getting a feel for which product suits an application best before investing in larger quantities if necessary.
To use, the clay must be 'conditioned' by kneading to homogenise the plasticisers and then can be sculpted using any suitable tools.
