Aluminium Mesh

Aluminium mesh is one of those really useful materials not commonly found in the usual modelling material stockists. Some may stock it, but the best source is probably a general car body / repair / maintenance type place. It can be found alongside the body filler, repair equipment (not that anyone needs these thing normally!), sold in small sheets of ~300x200mm.

Some larger art & craft shops also sell mesh in larger sheets or as rolls. The advantage of this source is that finer grades are available, but at significantly more cost.



Aluminium mesh is soft, bendable and easily cut with a craft knife on a cutting mat, or just scissors.

So what's it useful for..? Lots.
A bit of cunning & ingenuity plus some planning can save time and effort and reduce the use of more expensive materials. it can be 'draped' over armatures for larger models and terrain / diorama building or used 'as is' to make things like fences, shown by the example below.
