Foamboard

2004-2-13

Foamboard, or Foamcore as it is sometimes known, consists of two layers of fine cardboard sandwiching an expanded foam centre. Foamboard is lightweight, rigid, strong and easy to cut using a craft knife and steel ruler making it an ideal material for model construction.

Foamboard is readilly available from craft and art material suppliers, it is used for mounting displays, airbrush work and modelling!

Three thicknesses are commonly available: 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm with sheet sizes from A4 to A0. Huge 8'x4' sheets can also be obtained from some specialist sources!

One manufacturer produces foamboard in seven thicknesses up to 2" as standard, up to 3" thick on special request but obviously only in commercial quantities to trade customers.

Note: cut edges must be sealed before exposing to solvents such as spray paints otherwise the polystyrene core dissolves.
