Like Japanese electronics, all of the best miniatures seem to be getting smaller and smaller. Once 15mm figures were considered puny. Nowadays you can buy 1:300th scale figures - and it won't stop there. The only thing that's certain is that we're all going to end up cross eyed!
In the world of the so-called "Braille Scale" models one name stands taller than all the rest; American company, GHQ. Their range of 1:285th modern and WWII armour is the best their is and no one has even come close to matching its quality. That was until now.
Walter Vail's "Image Replicas" may be a fledgling company but it has already started to impress. This LCT Mk5 landing craft was their very first release. The real thing was over 114 feet in length - but in 1:285th scale that boils down to a little under 12 centimetres!
If you collect micro scale models, you may feel that some commentators don't take your hobby seriously. For many, anything below 54mm scale is inferior and should be locked away in some dark corner of the world where even fewer people will notice it! All that ends here - because as soon as I opened this kit I knew I was looking at something special.
The LCT (5) is composed of 4 separate pieces, namely the main hull, bow door and two small funnels. It is cast in a familiar, grey resin - but any and all similarity to most other models can be forgotten. The fact is, the main hull is one of the most perfect castings I think I've ever seen. All of the details are sharp, crisp and rendered with tremendous accuracy. Even the tiniest feature - like the miniscule mooring cleats - have been modelled with great precision. Yet there isn't even a sniff of a single casting defect, artifact or other impurity to be found anywhere. In short, the hull is so clean, if it were big enough, I would be happy to eat my lunch off it!
Perhaps the only disappointing feature of this kit is that it looks a bit bare in places. The area around the wheelhouse, for example, would benefit from a few extra details - but this is a minor gripe. The fact remains that this is a terrific first shot from a company who I will be watching very closely over the months and years to come. Image Replicas are here!
