When making military models the final act is very often the application of decals and the like. Whilst it's certainly true to say that such decorations do breath extra life into a model, the application process can be a frustrating one. Anyone who has ever spent 10 minutes trying to unfold a soggy, water-slide transfer which has decided - for some inexplicable reason - to do an impersonation of an armadillo will know exactly where I'm coming from!

About a year ago I started to hear rumblings about a kind of model transfer which promised to do away with the whole messy business of water (and armadillos, presumably). The company in question was Archer Fine Transfers. Owner, Woody Vondracek, claimed to have perfected a range of dry transfers for the model industry - and everyone was talking about them. I decided to buy several sheets to see what all the fuss was about!

I chose to make the Balkenkreutz set the focus of this review for good reason. This symbol is very geometric and if any "slippage" has occurred in the printing process - especially where a black cross is superimposed on to a larger white cross - it will be clear to see. Thankfully, I'm pleased to report that no such problems could be found. Each cross is rendered perfectly - even the smallest which is less than 3mm wide. The entire sheet of transfers measures approx. 7cm square on which are arrayed about 80 Balkenkreutz of various designs and sizes.

As has already been mentioned, the most important feature of these transfers is the way they are applied. On closer inspection you will notice that the symbols are not printed on the front of the carrier sheet - like water slide decals - but on the back. In order to use them, simply position the sheet on the body of your model and rub the area around the chosen symbol with a blunt pencil. Then, simply peel away the carrier sheet leaving the symbol affixed to the model.

It's that easy!

All you need to finish the job is a thin coat of varnish or Jonson's Klear floor wax to seal the symbol in position. Once protected, you are then free to add weathering effects or washes without fear of damaging the transfer. Better still, because they are printed on an impossibly thin membrane, you won't encounter any nasty "stepping" effects.

As you can probably guess, I like these transfers. They are so very easy to use that I can almost guarantee they will change your perception of decals for ever. It certainly worked for me!
