A figure with almost perfect proportions... Reviewer Rating: 4.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.04.0/5.0

At the time of writing this review, Adam Clarke's "Black Scorpion Miniatures" has been trading for less than a year. During that short time his emerging range of 28mm figures and larger figurines has attracted many plaudits. Not only is Adam a talented sculptor, he also has an eye for presentation - a skill all too often overlooked (or ignored) by many "old school" miniature companies.

Achilles was Adam's first offering from the large scale figurine range. The character measures approximately 60mm from head to toe - plus helmet. This is (literally) head and shoulders taller than, say, a typical 1:35th scale figure. As Adam points out on his site, however, the fact there is no particular theme to the range means he can (and will) experiment with figures of all shapes and sizes!

The figure is assembled from 4 separate components - all cast in white metal - namely the body, head, sword (with hand) and left arm. The latter sports a huge disk-shaped shield decorated with lots of raised detail. This is mirrored across the entire figure from the imperious helmet crest down to the relief patterns on the shin greaves. The quality of the sculpting is terrific and Adam's style ensures that everything about the character is both neat and relaxed.

Some sculptors can "do" figures and some can't. Adam quite clearly can! Strip off the armour and tunic and you're left with a figure with almost perfect proportions. In typically heroic style Achilles appears to have been blessed with the kind of figure most men would die for - especially if his bulging biceps are anything to go on! Here Adam has gone so far as to add a few throbbing veins for extra effect!

This a is a really tidy figure. When you consider that Adam has only just launched his company it's an exceptionally good figure. The detail is great, the proportions are spot on and - in terms of the kit - it goes together very neatly. What more could you ask.

If you're figure painter, Black Scorpion deserves a closer look!
