Many model railway enthusiasts start out with a layout consisting of an oval track, one siding and a loco to run. The electric's are simple, connect track to controller, plug into the mains supply and away you go.

As you progress the layout becomes more sophisticated with perhaps a second or third oval and goods yard, with two or three locos running at the same time. This means two/three controllers, several connections from controllers to track, isolating sections of track to avoid conflicts, add to that electrically operated points and signals and it soon becomes a wiring nightmare.

I am currently designing a new "end to end" layout and needed some expert guidance , and I came across "Wiring The Layout by Geoff Geary". It covers everything from wiring basics and the principles of electricity to more advanced issues such as relay circuits.

The book is easy to read with lots of diagrams to aid your understanding. I would say however you may need two or three readings on the advanced stuff before the fog starts to clear.

The book also comes with a CD of "Trax" software. The program enables you design and build a layout on your PC and operate it to test the wiring. Much less frustrating than building your real layout and finding nothing happens when you switch on!

There is a good chapter in the book explaining how to use the program and with a little practice you can start building your layout. I only have one small criticism, and that is you have to be fairly proficient at using your mouse, and the track break component is very small and it can be hard to spot them on the track plan.

I have been running the program for several weeks on my Windows 98, 333Mhz, Pentium II PC and have experienced no problems.

A sound investment at £14.99 (inc post).
