Reviewed by Paul Middleton (paul.middleton600@ntlworld.com) June 22, 2005
In this volume of the series on British Camouflage and colours, Mike describes the camouflage applied to British Army vehicles in home stations and on active service with the B.E.F. and later after D-Day in the liberation of Europe. As the same paint schemes were used by the RAF after 1940, this book will be of use to those interested in RAF M/T as well.
Mike gives his information sources, and the origins of the paints used. He then covers how the Army Instructions procured the paint, and how the 'Official' descriptions were used, and in some cases lead to major confusion over exact shades, and how Disruptive designs were not cut and dried, but often overlapped in an effort to conserve materials and time.
Then comes a section covering the colours and schemes used in the UK and France 1936-1941. Army Council Instructions (A.C.I.) and Military Training Pamphlets (M.T.P.) are listed to highlight the changes in practice (or intended practice!). To support the text are copies of the relevant camouflage schemes illustrations are included along with references to books with helpful photographs. The same style of presentation then follows for Northwest Europe 1944-45, dealing with the much-disputed Olive Drab colour, officially S.C.C.15. The counter-shading under the barrel of the 17pdr Sherman Firefly also receives attention, with sketches of the pattern.
Towards the back of the book is a list of the Official colours, and painted examples of the colours, which have been mixed by Mike, painted on to strips, which have then been cut up and stuck to the page. This labour intensive practice has been used to avoid the inconsistencies of the printing process. With these paint samples are mixes for Humbrol and Revell paints, and reference to the White Ensign Model paints, where Mike considers them to be useable. Reference is also made to the information available on www.mafva.org.
