This year saw the welcome return of one of the most successful sci-fi shows
in television history. More than a decade
has passed since the last Dr Who series fizzled out on TV - during which time a
legion of "Whovians" have been busy chomping on the bit, eagerly anticipating
the resurrection of their favourite Time Lord. When it was announced that
acclaimed thesp' Christopher Ecclestone would take the lead role, supported
by the surprisingly able Billie Piper, they knew there would never be
a better opportunity for the show to recapture some of the magic of old.
They weren't disappointed..
The show was an overnight success and
Ecclestone - in particular - was an instant hit with the fans. Just as his
star was rising to ever greater heights, however, he stunned everyone by
chucking in the towel. By the time the credits rolled on the final episode,
Eccclestone had already made way for his replacement, David Tenant. Although
the former "Casanova" actor seems an ideal candidate for the role, Ecclestone's
enigmatic and all too brief tenure is certain to guarantee him cult status
amongst the Whovian loremasters!
If that wasn't enough, someone, somewhere is already minting 28mm replicas
of him.
Thankfully, some of these miniatures have fallen into
the capable hands of top figure painter Kevin Dallimore. He's just posted
the fruits of his labours in another of the seemingly endless galleries
on his site. Ecclestone's character is there and alongside Ms Piper's. They've been joined - for some obscure reason - by a rendering of Mr Tood himself,
Vin Diesel! I'm not entirely sure if the actor behind Riddick, xXx, et
al, has been signed up to play a part in the next series of Dr Who
(as a well-cut Davros, perhaps) but it matters little. Such is the quality
of Kevin's artwork that these miniatures never look out of place - anywhere.
