Island Open XI

On Saturday, September 18, 2004, The Victoria Scale Modellers (VSM) along with Scale Plastic Automotive Modellers (SPAM) hosted the Island Open XI, held in beautiful Sidney BC, a short distance outside of Victoria. The 2003 show was missed, but 2004 would prove to be one of our biggest contests/displays yet. Setup for the show was on Friday, and the majority of the organizing was done, from setting up the tables, laying out category titles, and of course laying out our entries and stuff for the display tables.

The next day, the big event was on. I arrived at about 8:30am, and by then things were well under way. With my registration paperwork all filled out, I proceeded to the armour diorama table, and I swear, there were so many dios on the table, the table was bowing slightly! Of course, most of the entries were from both me and Russ, and the “friendly competition” was on.

The majority of the tables were filled in every category. There were a ton of aircraft, armour, and especially automotive. Bil Attridge, last year’s TamiyaCon winner had his MP4 on display and as an entrant. We had some visitors from other clubs come by, the Rocky Mountain Model Club from Calgary, Alberta… and the Plastic Pistons car group from Vancouver. There were raffle draws, vendor tables, and the ever popular Make & Take program for the kids sponsored by Revell. Instead of 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place ribbons for the categories, they were replaced by gold, silver and bronze metal medallions, which looked superb, as well as the trophies.

There is so much info to describe, it would take a long time to write it all out, so I’ve included photos of the event for all to peruse. Enjoy! Sorry about the quality of them, I had to clean them up quite a bit, for some reason even in a brightly lit room, and the flash on my camera, a lot of the photos turned out quite dark. One of these days I’ll have to break down and get a digital camera…
