Tom Weiss Figurines
Recently I received an email from the webmaster of this illustrious
webpage and got asked if I would like to get a gallery with my painted
models on total model. I was realy honoured and said "Sure, I
would love to see this!". I just needed to supply some photos
(no problem) and a short articel about me and my stuff. Well, an articel,
no problem. During long hours of painting I always have lots of strange
ideas on writing something, but these seem to get lost as soon as
I drop the brush. So now I sit here in front of my computer and have
no real idea where to start.
Probably at the beginning. (Well, not realy at the beginning, this
would be legos and would result in a medium sized book. But on the
other hand... do you remember the lego medieval stuff? Castles, knights...stop...)
Ok, few years later, at the very beginning of the 1990s, I got attracted
by Citadel Miniatures and Warhammer. As I always liked model soldiers
(like legos) I bought some minis on a visit in Great Britain, got
myself some colours and a White Dwarf and started painting. So that's
the typical beginning of the addiction I suppose.
Painting has always been the main part of the hobby for me. I wanted
my models to look the very best way I manage to paint them and mainly
painted display stuff for the following years. Probably this even
worked quite well, resulting in some places in painting competitions,
local or internet, and ended in beeing lucky enough to win a few silver
and golden demons at german Games Day. The downside of this kind of
painting is it needs a long time for a model to be finished, so over
the years my boxes of unpainted lead reached a level a small store
would be proud of and something needed to be done.
As
I have always been realy excited about the models in the Foundry catalouges
(especially the pirates and the Darkest Africa stuff is amazing always
again!) I gave this style of painting a try. It is mainly a black
undercoat and a few layers of blocked lighter paint on it. After a
few dozen training models (and after reading everything Foundry has
printed about this topic) I had some basic ideas how this technique
works and so I started to paint my stuff that way. Today I'm quite
happy with the results as I think this style of painting is ideal
for 28mm models. It exaggerates the detail of the miniatures a lot
which looks realy good on the battlefield and they are still effective
when placed in the vitrin as display models. That said this is just
my very personal oppinion and I know a bunch of people who don't like
this style so much. On the next page you can make your own oppinion
looking at some of my favourite painted models.
To see more stuff like this you can visit my website and check the
galleries. I also run a small painting service for 28mm miniatures.
If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line and comments
are also always welcome!.
