Brian Phillips Figure Painting

Recently I was asked if I would like to have a feature page on Total Model, well as you can imagine I was delighted with the offer and jumped at the chance. I just need to supply some photographs of my figures, (easy peasy) and write an article about myself (not so easy) I have been dreading this part for weeks, where do I begin, from the beginning I suppose.

I have been painting miniatures for over 30 years and have enjoyed every minute, well almost every minute. I first discovered model figures in a magazine called "Battle" where I read an advertisement for a Wargames show taking place in Glasgow, Scotland. As soon as I went through the doors I thought I had died and went to heaven, thousands of figures for sale, beautifully painted miniatures on show in every cabinet, demonstration wargames with fantastically painted armies fighting each other. I decided there and then I wanted to paint figures to the best of my ability and use them to wargame with. I bought some paints and a load of figures and didn't sleep for a week, I remember the first figures I painted were Hinchcliffe Sassanid Persian Levy Spearmen, I thought they looked great.

Painting has always been one of the main parts of the hobby for me and over the years I have strived to increase my painting skills by any and all means available to me. I firmly believe that anyone can paint figures but to be a figure painter apparently you need Skill, Determination and Patience. I must be the exception to the rule I am not artist trained I just enjoy painting model figures to the best of my ability and gaming with them, although some of them do live in a nice display cabinet.

Seriously, don't be afraid to ask questions, practice is the key look at other people's figure painting, study their techniques, I have learnt so much from doing that and would like to take this opportunity to thank the following: Pat Connor, Dave Imrie, Dave Andrews, Aly Morrison, Tom Weiss, Dave Woodward and Glasgow and District Wargames Society the club I have been a member of for the past 20+ years.

I am no different from a lot of figure painters I have changed my painting style on a number of occasions until I found the right style and colour combinations that suit me. Paint is obviously extremely important, personally I paint on a black undercoat and use primarily Vallejo Acrylics although occasionally I also use Foundry, Games Workshop and Windsor and Newton Finity acrylics. All my figures are finished with gloss and matt varnish to provide the protection needed during transport and handling.

The best advice I can give any aspiring figure painter is go with what you like and you can't go wrong.

Brian
