Landing Craft Infantry (Large) Kit on the Way!

Certain quarters of the military modelling fraternity persist in the rather spurious belief that anything under 1:35th scale is somehow small and inadequate. Anyone who has taken even a cursory look through the Milicast 1:76th scale "Premiere" range will know this couldn't be further from the truth. Although they may be smaller than their larger 54mm cousins, whatever they like in size they more than make up for in detail and quality. As if to demonstrate this fact, Milicast have just unveiled one of the largest and most comprehensive 1:76th scale kits around.

During the World War II the United States Navy (in particular) revolutionised the use of landing craft. These rudimentary, flat bottomed ships were designed to deliver soldiers on to the beech as quickly as possible. Some of the most successful craft were the LCIs - or Landing Craft Infantry. Measuring almost 160 feet in length, the LCI(L) could transport up to 200 men and their equipment. They operated in almost every theatre of the war including the landings in Italy, North Africa, the Pacific and Normandy. Other variants, such as the LCI(Gun) ships, were armed with a variety of guns and rockets to provide close support for the troops.

Milicast will be hoping to make a few waves of their own by releasing a 1:76th scale version of the LCI(L). At 28" long, with brass frets, decals and illustrated instructions, it is the biggest project the company have ever undertaken. It will also be the most expensive. The kit is expected to retail in the region of £175. Both British and an American versions will be available. The only difference is the height of the forecastle and some other fittings.

The model shown on this page is incomplete and still under construction. Hopefully we will be able to bring you images of the finished craft just as soon as they are available.
