Accurate Armour K2/Y Competition
By Total Model

The Competition
Earlier this year Accurate Armour released an 1:35th scale kit version of the K2/Y ambulance. It features full interior detail, full engine and suspension detail, 4 stretchers, optional parts, stowage, extensive full colour decals and etched brass detailing set. Normally, this kit retails for £84.99 (approximately $163USD).

More than 13,000 of these vehicles were produced during the war and were deployed on all fronts in a variety of roles. The K2/Y was even supplied to the US Army and US Air Force under 'reverse lend-lease'. Many were also dispatched to the Soviet Union and captured examples were much prized by the German armed forces.

Ice Cold in Alex
In later years the K2/Y ambulance became synonymous with the film "Ice Cold in Alex" in which it had a starring role! The film is set in Lybia during the Second World War. It tells the story of Captain Anson (played by Sir John Mills) who dreams of an ice-cold beer in the distant sanctuary of Alexandria. The only thing that lies between him and his goal is several thousand square miles of baking desert and several hundred heavily-armed German soldiers. Throw in a mine-field, some quick-sand and a shifty South-African spy and you've got all the makings of a classic British wartime drama.

Mills is joined on his quest by the indomitable Sergeant Major Pugh and 2 frightened nurses - one of them played by a young Sylvia Sims. Any film buff worth their salt, however, will tell you that the star of the show was "Katy" - the K2/Y ambulance in which they travel across the desert.

The Prize
Accurate's K2/Y is a truly comprehensive model and represents a most desirable prize in its own right - but the winner of this competition will receive a very special, almost unique, version of the kit!

In July 2004, Accurate Armour attended the annual "War and Peace" show in the south of England. Also appearing - as a guest of honour - was none other than Sylvia Sims. During a charity fund raiser the actress signed 4 of the K2/Y kit boxes. One was donated to the charity and 2 were retained by Accurate Armour. The remaining 4th kit will be awarded to the winner of this competition.

This competition is now over. It was won by Erol Oran of Atlanta, USA.

The question posed by the competition asked you name the original manufacturers of 8 models produced by Accurate Armour. The models and the correct manufacturers are displayed below.
