I have like many guys of my age grown up building model aircraft and suspending
them from the bedroom ceiling. Then things like marriage, kids and career
take over your life. It was only 3 or 4 years ago that I returned to serious
modelling when my wife gave me a Hornby Flying Scotsman set for Christmas,
which I have developed into my current layout.
If you ask a model railway enthusiast. " What appeals to them about
the hobby?" You will receive many different answers, from re-creating
a childhood memory, building a world in miniature or overcoming the technical
problems of building an electronic control system. You can model in the
solitude of your shed or garage workshop, sit in a sun lounger and watch
your trains run around your garden or stand in front of hundreds of people
at an exhibition as part of a team.
The attraction for me is the peace and quiet of my garage workshop where
I can let my imagination and ingenuity go to work. I use ready to run
rolling stock and building kits, but the real satisfaction comes from
the parts of the layout that are scratch built.
This is a hobby with universal appeal.
