I have been making steam locomotives with matches for over 10 years. During this time I have constructed 12 different models. The Flying Scotsman will be my last as they up a lot of time and space! The locomotive was made entirely from scratch from accurate drawings in 1:20th scale. All I use is matchsticks, wood glue, thin card, a craft knife, some scissors and lots and lots of patience!
My other models include Stephenson's Rocket, a Coronation Class Dutchess of Sutherland, the Evening Star and a 3F Jinty. To give you an idea of the work involved, the Dutchess of Sutherland - which measures 4 feet in length - is composed of over 30,000 matches! All of the models are displayed in glass cases - which I also made.
I have displayed my models in several exhibitions around my area including the National Exhibition Center (NEC) in Birmingham. I also display at several country steam fairs during the summer. In recent years other examples of my work have been on permanent display at the Midland Railway Center.
