The Total Model Anniversary Competition! (closed) |

A few months ago I began to consider the
possibility of staging a special event to mark the first successful year
of the Total Model website. The easiest option was to hold some form of
"anniversary painting competition" with a single prize awarded
to the best model posted in the User Gallery. As it turned out, however,
it was never going to be that simple. Total Model attracts a very diverse
audience of military model makers, wargamers and even model railway enthusiasts.
The more I thought about this the more I realised there was no sure or fair
way to compare one particular type of model with another. The only alternative
was to use categories - with one winner representing each group. I rejected
this idea immediately because it completely torpedoed my intention of having
one winner and one prize.
I soon realised that what was needed was some form of "leveler";
a competition mechanism that would allow all entries to be judged equally
regardless of type, scale or genre. After much head scratching I finally
decided upon a formula that would give us all an opportunity to take part
- side by side - and have a a bit of fun into the bargain. Better still,
because there's only going to be one winner - the prize is an absolute corker!
Welcome to the Total Model Anniversary Caption Competition! Here, for one month
only, you are invited to show off not only your model making talent and
photography skills - but also your wit! In order to win this competition
you will need to exhibit all three qualities. First you will need to create,
build and/or paint your model. Then you will need to photograph it. Finally
you will need to crown it with a caption which - if nothing else - is guaranteed
to draw a smile from our esteemed judge - namely, me!
The Rules:
- Each image entered into the competition must depict a
model/figure/diorama/etc. that you have built or painted yourself.
- All images must be uploaded into the the new "Competition"
category in the User Gallery.
- You must enter your caption in the "Photo Description"
text box whilst uploading the image.
- Each person may submit no more than 3 images. You could - for example - photograph 3 different models and submit each one with its own caption. Alternatively you could simply enter 3 images of the same model. It is entirely up to you.
- Once an image has been uploaded it will not be removed
for any reason - so choose your entries carefully!
Failure to adhere to any of these simple rules will result
in automatic disqualification from the competition.
The Prize:
The winner will receive a terrific military model diorama starter pack which
consists of:
- A Tamiya 1:35th scale Gun Tractor.
- A box of Tamiya 1:35th Scale "British Infantry on
Patrol" figures.
- A 1:35th scale British Tankman figure from Wolf.
- A Diorama Road Base from Great North Roads.
- A copy of Phil Greenwood's "Military Vehicle Modelling"
book.
- A copy of Mark Stanton's "Scale Aircraft Modelling"
book.
- A Mystery prize?
The winner will be chosen by me on December 1st. I'll be looking
for a great photograph of a great model illuminated with a very witty caption
- so get cracking.
