Alpha Miniatures are a small, family run
outfit based in New Zealand. They produce 2 very different ranges of military
figurines which are handcrafted and cast in pewter. At this present moment,
the company are concentrating all their efforts on an impressive line-up
of 54mm figures called "Rome at War". As you might expect, the
range focuses on a period of historical conflict and conquest between 100BC
and 200AD.
There is already a selection of Imperial Roman troops to choose from, including
legionaries and auxiliaries - all sporting with the tractional weapons and
armour of the age. These will soon be joined by 8 new command figures in
the coming weeks. An entirely new range of Germanic Warriors is also scheduled
for imminent release.
The Rome at War Range also includes a line of 13 individual Gladiators and
associated character figures. These miniatures are highly collectable and can be used either as display figures or even as playing pieces with which to re-enact
your own gladiatorial combats. Two Hour Wargames have produced a set of
rules called "Red Sand, Blue Sky" which will allow you to do just
that! Players can create a character and follow his career to fame and fortune,
or become a Lanista and create their own gladiator school.
In this month's competition, Alpha Miniatures are giving you the opportunity
to win any six figures of your choice from the "Early Imperial Rome"
range - complete with bases. All you have to do is answer a simple question...
This competition is now closed. It was won by Mr B. Rockall (aka: Rodin) from Edinburgh in Scotland. He correctly identified that - according to the Alpha Miniatures website - the first known gladiatorial combat took place in 264 BC!
